Heatstroke: Causes, symptoms and treatment

  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and avoid alcohol and caffeine.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, and loose-fitting clothing.
  • Protect against sunburn with hats, sunglasses, and an SPF 30+ sunscreen.
  • Never leave anyone in a parked car in hot weather.
  • Schedule strenuous activities for cooler times of the day.
  • Acclimate yourself to the heat slowly over several days if you’re traveling to a warmer climate or experiencing a heatwave.
  • Be aware of the signs of heat exhaustion, the precursor to heatstroke, and take action immediately if symptoms are present.
